Welcome to Bastrop County Texas

Central Texas Town

Bastrop, the county seat of Bastrop County, is a central Texas town situated approximately 30 miles southeast of downtown Austin. It holds strategic importance as it is located at the junction of State highways 71, 21, and 95, along the Colorado River and the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad. The town’s history dates back to 1804 when a fort named Puesta del Colorado was established. Named Bastrop by Stephen F. Austin in honor of Baron de Bastrop, the town experienced initial settlement challenges but eventually thrived. It served as a prominent business, commercial, and political center, providing protection against Indian threats. Bastrop’s economy relied on timber and became a vital lumber supplier for Austin. The town witnessed rapid development in the 1850s with the establishment of churches, schools, newspapers, and a military institute. It played a role in the Civil War, faced challenges such as fire and floods, and later saw the rise of various industries. Bastrop’s population peaked during World War II due to the presence of Camp Swift. Despite subsequent population declines, the town remains an agribusiness center with diverse industries.
